Exports of food and drink make an important contribution to the economy, exceeding £23bn in 2019 and going to over 220 countries worldwide.

Q1 2021 Food and Drink Trade Snapshot

Update

FDF’s newly-released Q1 Trade Snapshot shows that for the first time in our reporting, non-EU exports of food and drink outgrew sales to countries in EU as a consequence of a large drop in sales, resulting from the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 ad changes in the UK’s trading relationships.

Exports to the EU fell by 47% compared to the same quarter last year, with sales to the Republic of Ireland down more than three quarters. The report also looks at imports from the EU, which were down 16% from Q1 2020.

In Q1 2021 there has also been a return to strong growth exports to East Asia, where there is a high demand for quality UK food and drink, driven by growing demand from China, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.

Full 2020 Food and Drink Exports Snapshot

The report looks at exports performance in 2020 and highlights the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the end of the EU Exit transition period on food and drink manufacturing. The report includes a focus on exports to four growth markets: the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on businesses operating across the food and drink sector and exports fell by 9.7% compared to the previous year. The reduction in exports was reflected among all the UK nations and regions, whose performance and contribution is carefully analysed in the report, alongside insights provided by FDF Scotland and FDF Cymru.

Q3 2020 Food and Drink Exports Snapshot

FDF’s newly-released Q3 Exports Snapshot shows that food and drink exports continued to decline both in EU and non-EU markets, with only pork and breakfast cereals experiencing growth among the top 10 product exports in the first nine months of 2020. The UK top 3 exports partners remain Ireland, the USA and France.

Ireland confirmed its role as a key trade partner for the UK, being the top destination market for 5 out of the top 10 UK products and accounting for 30% of UK food and drink sales in the EU. Maintaining these highly integrated supply chains across Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland as we leave the EU will be essential for future growth in our industry.

Looking at new opportunities via preferential trade agreements, Japan and Australia are within the top 20 UK export markets, accounting for £513.5m of exports between January and September. New Zealand also offers great opportunities for exporters. For further insight, see our latest report.
