The FDF responds to the launch of negotiations for a new Free Trade Agreement between the UK and Canada

24 March 2022

The United Kingdom and Canada have formally started talks on a multi-billion pound trade deal, which will benefit more than 10,000 UK small and medium-sized businesses from lower barriers to trade such as simplified paperwork.

Dominic Goudie, Head of International Trade, the FDF, said:

“The launch of talks between the UK and Canada is a great opportunity to secure improvements to an already ambitious agreement by putting in place a deal that is better tailored to trade in food and drink between the two countries.

“It should be a priority to secure improved market access for UK exporters of cheese that lost valuable access to the EU’s Tariff Rate Quota when the continuity deal entered into force last year. We also hope the deal can deliver simpler and more generous rules of origin and improved trade facilitation at the border to speed up movements of short shelf-life products.”
