Mondelēz International – Plant Based Fibre Technology

In December 2022, Mondelēz International announced the development of ground-breaking, new technology, which could lead for the first time to the creation of alternative versions of some of its much-loved chocolate and biscuit brands, with potential for up to 75% less sugar and fat, and reduced calories.


Developed in a partnership between food scientists at landmark Research and Development sites in Reading, Bournville, Europe and the US, this technology is a unique way to reduce the sugar and fat content in chocolate bars and biscuit fillings with plant-based fibres – all without compromising on taste or texture. Fillings that could be replaced with lower fat, calorie and sugar versions include honeycomb, caramel, nougat, marshmallow and fudge – all without compromising on taste or texture.

This is the latest development in the Mondelēz International’s goal to offer consumers more choice when it comes to snacking mindfully and managing their overall diet. This also places Mondelēz International in an enhanced position to, in the future, produce alternative non-HFSS versions of iconic products such as Cadbury Crunchie, Cadbury Double Decker, Cadbury Fudge and Fry’s Turkish Delight.
